I love flip books! I especially love quality flip books that truly help **third-grade** students comprehend a difficult standard. These flip books are cheap properties of multiplication tools to stop the agony in your centers, etc...

I promise, I am not tooting my own horn! These flip books guide students, step-by-step, through the **commutative**
**property**, **associative property**, and **distributive property of multiplication**.

As noted above, these flip books guide students through the commutative, associative, and distributive property of multiplication.

First, the definition is written in terms that students can understand.

Then, The students are shown what the definition means.

Next, a tip is given so students further conceptualize what they just read.

Last, the flip books allow students to "try it for themselves".

Many people use the flip books in interactive notebooks for students to reference when they need them. This is a great idea and, in my opinion, very beneficial.

Alternatively, I personally like the idea of putting them at math center stations and in math toolboxes. The flip books can be just as beneficial as multiplication charts.

The ** commutative property of multiplication** states that the

**5 × 7 = 7 × 5**

As you can see, the numbers can move, but the answer will be the same.

Notice how the parenthesis are what changes the grouping in the multiplication sentence. The product will in fact be the same, and the numbers **DO NOT** change places.

The **distributive property of multiplication **states that when a number is multiplied by the sum of two numbers, the first can be **distributed** to both of those and multiplied by each separately, then adding the two products together.

First, we "**break-up"** one of the factors to make it easier for 3rd-graders to multiply. If a student is given the multiplication sentence **8 × 16**, it is much easier for the student to "**break up**" the factor **16**.

**For example:**

**8 × (10 + 6)**

Next, the student will **distribute** the **8** to the addends and write a new equation.

**(8 × 10) + (8 × 6)**

Last, solve the equation.

**80 + 48 = 128**

As you can see, "breaking-up" the factor **16** and distributing the **8** to each addend made the problem much easier to solve. A student does not necessarily have to break **16** up into **10** and **6**, but it most cases it is the logical way.

What's so great about these properties of multiplication task cards? Personally, I think it is because they come with interactive notebook inserts. Plus, they break down the commutative, associative, and distributive property down for third-grade students to understand.

If you use the task cards for math centers, you can print them on card-stock and laminate. These two steps help with durability and in turn save money because you don't have to reproduce them so often. Alternately, if you don't print them on card-stock, you can always print them on colored paper.

On an opposite note, the properties of multiplication can be a hard task for third-grade students. Third-grade is a hard year (in my professional opinion) for math altogether. Consequently, this is why I worked hard to develop an engaging and useful resource to help reinforce teachers' properties of multiplication curriculum in third-grade.

The struggle is real when it comes to finding Hanukkah activities for math. I absolutely **LOVE** these Hanukkah multiplication and division color by number worksheets because there are not a lot of Hanukkah-themed math resources available. Color by number worksheets are always a big hit! I cannot tell you how many teachers say, "my students LOVED THESE!"

I think task cards are often boring and overdone. I myself have made task cards I am not proud of. However, these task cards offer content rich value to your classroom.

Consequently, I use the term task card lightly. You can use them for many things. One customer even uses them for exit tickets.

Honestly, I feel that the task cards work best in math centers and rotations. They offer students a short task, problem-solving exercise, or fun activity to accomplish during their math centers.

My instructions for the mega bundle are similar to the **advice I provided on the freebie.**

Identifying arithmetic patterns in 3rd-grade using the four operations does not have to be a complicated concept for students.

I have created two different activities to help students creatively identify arithmetic patterns. The first activity is task cards using the four operations table and the second is using a multiplication chart to identify multiples and patterns.

Controversially, I am not going to lie, task cards are overdone. As a math teacher, I see so many task cards that "kinda" get the job done, and some that probably don't.

Alternately, there are some **AMAZING** standards-based task cards that obviously took much creativity and thought.

With both of these factors in mind, I created two sets of task cards that I truly feel add value and simplicity to identifying arithmetic pattern math centers for 3rd-grade math.

The set of task cards shown below teach students how to find arithmetic patterns using the four operations by using a given rule. These task cards work well in math centers and math rotations because students can complete and check them independently.

I feel like these task cards step out of the 12, 15, ____, 21, 24... "find the missing number in the pattern". However, this objective has it's place, I just want to give teachers something their curriculum doesn't provide.

Next, task cards Identifying arithmetic patterns using multiplication charts. These task cards ask students to use the multiplication chart to find the multiples of each number. Then, ask the student to list any patterns that they notice.

Students are able to practice their problem solving skills as well as there number sense.

Like the task cards above, these work well in math centers and rotations. Teachers can write out an answer card with possible answers and students can check their work if needed.

Also, the multiplication charts are multi-purpose. You can use them for **SO MANY **other things in your classroom; math toolboxes, math centers, intervention, activities, etc...

Flip books make me **HAPPY**! **Math flip books for 3rd-grade** make me **SUPER HAPPY**!

I don't know about you, but I get excited when I know it is flip book construction day. First of all, students are always excited when they see flip books. Second of all, students' happiness is contagious and helps get me excited. Last, flip books are great reference tools for interactive notebooks and even math toolboxes.

Due to my serious love of flip books, I have created a **math flip books for 3rd grade bundle**.

Students are asked to say the **multiplication sentence** then, write the **multiplication sentence**. In this step you could also encourage you students to use the **commutative property** to write the **multiplication sentence** in another way.

**C.U.B.E.S. math strategy** is commonly used to teach students how to deconstruct word problems to make them easier to solve.

**Circle** all the important numbers, **underline** the question, **box** all the important math words, **evaluate** the important words that you may have left out and eliminate what you don't need, and **solve** the word problem.

This flip book is a compact way for students to review the steps at home or at school. Plus, I always think providing parents with manipulatives to help their kiddos reinforce what they are being taught is a **FABULOUS THING**! AND this flip book is not 3rd-grade specific so it can be used for many years.

The dreaded "F" word. Fractions don't have to be so bad! The fraction bundle comes with worksheets, task cards, and a game. They game (shown in the photos below) is a fraction recognition and matching game. I print the game on heavy paper or card stock, laminate the game on my personal laminator (I have a cheap $30 Scotch laminator), and use hook and loop dots to stick the pieces to the cards. The cards fit perfectly in the 3" by 4" containers from the dollar store.

The task cards included in the fraction bundle require students to identify the shaded portion of a fraction. I purposely did not theme the task cards or game so that teachers can reuse them throughout the year. You can see the task cards in the photo below.

There are 4 worksheets in the fraction bundle as you can see below. The worksheets cover recognizing fractions as part of a whole, the difference between the numerator and denominator, understand that fractions can be represented on a number line, represent a fraction from 0 to 1, divide fractions into equal parts on a number line .

Last, the fractions bundle aligns with standards 3.NF.A.1, 3.NF.A.2, 3.NF.A.2.A, and 3.NF.A.2.B, but will meet many state and district standards as well. The worksheets are not bogged down with a bunch of repetitive questions. I feel like this is an important feature in a resource because there are only so many hours that we have our students per day and 40 worksheets about fractions is not beneficial. If you have time for 40 fraction worksheets - you need to let the world in on your secret for time management!

JK! Truly though, we don't want to bog our students down with all that busy work either. That is why the bundles come with task cards and games instead of just worksheets or printables.

Multiplication and division fact families are one of my things to teach as well as make resources. Alternately, there are also a ton of resources out there for multiplication and division fluency. All each as cute as the next. I am not trying to sell you my resource saying it has this new strategy that no one else has. Nope! What is does have is efficiency and affordability. You don't need 50 different worksheets to teach fluency for multiplication and division, though there are enough out there.

There are five worksheets in the bundle and a set of *missing factor *task cards. They touch on the things you need for this standard and add a little spring to your class without costing you a small fortune for 50 worksheets you won't use.

The two-step word problem bundle comes with worksheets and task cards to get students ready for algebra. Third-grade is the level that the objective to represent word problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity is introduced. Below are the task cards that help students prepare to compose these word problems. In this case, repetition helps renew the memory files and preps the students to become familiar with these type of problems.

There several **AMAZING** word problem methods around to reinforce students ability to break down and understand word problems. My personal favorite is the **CUBES** method. It is not my personal method, so you will have to research that for yourself, but I find it is very beneficial in helping students again, break down the word problems.

Below are four worksheets included in the bundle. There are three with diverse types of two-step word problems using the four operations. **Jelly Bean Party** and **Marshmallow Bunnies** (worksheets) would be perfect for a guided math lesson or rotations. **Easter Egg Fun** is the same kind of two-step word problem worksheet, but it has two word problems that tie in to each other and end up having the same answer. The fourth is a color by number division worksheet to be used for fluency practice or a differentiated option in the case that a teacher needs an option for other students that are not ready for the other three choices.

Last in the bundle are these task cards pictured below. I am a certified mid/level math teacher (means I can teach up to Algebra 2 and Geometry) so I am not blowing smoke when I say it is **VERY** important to have a strong algebra base for students to struggle less with each consecutive year. Like I said above, 3rd grade is the level in which algebra problems like these are introduced and will just get more difficult each school year.

The standard requires the word problems be composed using letters or variables standing for an unknown quantity. Also, this is where the beginning of the order of operations is introduced. As you can see in the photograph below the task cards include questions representing both objectives. For instance "9 × 9 + 9 =" is an entry level order of operations question. It does not require students to solve parenthesis first or use PEMDAS, but it does get them familiar with multi-step problems.

There are 5 multiplication strategies I use for teaching multiplication with ease. These multiplication strategies include; **grouping**, **arrays**, **repeated addition**, **skip counting**, or **number lines**.

The first multiplication strategy is learning multiplication by grouping is the process of separating objects into equal groups. Most commonly when using equal groups, repeated addition is also used. This method is one of the most straightforward ways for students to comprehend the strategy of multiplication by grouping.

As you can see in the example below there are 3 equal groups of 2 cookies. Students can use repeated addition to solve a multiplication problem like the one below.

In the classroom teachers can use manipulative such as; erasers, counters, small blocks, or even drawing on dry erase boards to practice the strategy of grouping and repeated addition.

**2 + 2 + 2 = 6**

Second, are arrays. Arrays are an arrangement of objects arranged in rows and columns.

The arrangement of cookies shown below shows the systematic way to introduce arrays. The student will first learn a 1 × 4 array, 2 × 4 array, 3 × 4 array, 4 × 4 array, and so on... A larger arrangement of objects can also be broken down into arrays to preform many different types of multiplication, such as **properties of multiplication.**

Also, making arrays in the classroom can be fun AND engaging for students. Using colorful objects, such as; erasers, counters, and blocks to build arrays can keep all types of learners engaged and ready to learn.

Third, is repeated addition. We touched on using repeated addition with grouping above when we grouped 2 cookies in groups of three. Both learning using grouping and learning using arrays are complimentary to each other.

Repeated addition is using what students already know about addition to help them solve a multiplication problem.

**3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 18**

Last, learning multiplication by number lines uses the next strategy - skip counting. Skip counting is not just for providing students a way to count faster, it also helps them solve multiplication problems.

Starting at 0 students count in intervals until reaching the desired number. Students can also point out the pattern being used when skip counting.

**0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30...**

Fourth, is learning multiplication by number lines. Students will take "jumps" on the number line. These jumps help students solve multiplication problems by skip counting.

Number lines are an exceptional way to teach number sense as well.

** 2 4 6 8 10..... **

In conclusion, the 5 strategies to teach multiplication with ease include grouping, arrays, repeated addition, skip counting, and number lines.
